The vernal and autumnal equinoxes occur when the Earth's hemispheres are not tilted toward or away from the sun. Therefore, with the Sun directly above the channel, both hemispheres receive nearly equal amounts of sunlight. After the vernal equinox, the relevant hemispheres (the Northern Hemisphere in March and the Southern Hemisphere in September) are closer to the sun, resulting in longer daylight hours, earlier sunrises, and later sunsets.
At the vernal equinox, the ecliptic intersects the celestial equinox. The ecliptic is the narrow path of the sun in the sky; the celestial path is an imaginary line extending from the earth's path to the celestial sphere. They are tilted 23.5° to each other. If there were no tilt between them, there would be no seasons and equinoxes, and we would have "equinoxes" year-round.
